The Commercial Diver is not going underwater for fun!
Commercial Divers are trained technicians paid for the skills they can accomplish underwater; diving is simply a unique mode of transportation. Commercial / Industrial Diving is considered a hazardous occupation; the underwater environment and the often complex procedures necessary to carry out the work assignments can present severe hazards to divers’ safety and health. For these reasons, Commercial Diving requires teamwork and tacit understanding among all the team members, who must be well-trained, qualified and physically fit for the tasks being performed.
Unfortunately, Local Government Officials, Civil & Marine Contractors (Employers) and Divers (Employees) are not always clear about the distinction between Recreational Diving and Commercial Diving. There may be little difference in appearance between a fully kitted-out recreational diver in a wetsuit and tank about to explore the coral reef and a commercial diver about to repair a ship’s propeller in the harbour. However, there is a world of difference in the levels of training, certification, regulation, safety and equipment required.
Industrial Divers in Hong Kong mainly work for civil-marine, marine facilities, vessel maintenance, mooring systems, cooling water/sewage treatment/emergency fire pump systems and wreck recovery. Although the working depth for such Works is relatively shallow (do not exceed 30 meters), a Dive Team consisting of a minimum of One Diving Supervisor, One Working Diver and One Tender/Standby Diver using the Surface Air Supply with Communication or Tethered SCUBA (Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) is required regardless of water depth. Nevertheless, the Dive Team’s operational experience and know-how in performing the particular tasks are incredibly crucial to safety and efficiency.
